THE EXHIBITION OF THE LETTERS
WRITTEN BY THE PATRIOTS IN THE CLOSING DAYS
OF THE TOKUGAWA SHOGUNATE

---From a collection of letters by Masatsugu Yamane---

December 18, 2006〜April 8, 2007
Project-based Exhibition Room

Masatsugu Yamane was born in Hagi and took an active part in the medical circles as a medical man and a politician from the Meiji period till the Taisho period.
This time the precious materials he had long collected were kindly presented to the Hagi Museum by his descendants.
Masatsugu Yamane, who was of a younger generation than the veteran statesmen of the Imperial Restoration of Meiji, was eager to make a collection of the letters written by the patriots who had played a conspicuous role in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate until early in the Meiji period.
In this exhibition, the letters which the patriots, such as Shoin Yoshida, Genzui Kusaka, Shinsaku Takasugi, etc., had written with passion were mainly introduced to be on display.
Formerly, letters generally had a footing in society as a means of an exchange of information. We will be very happy if you take in what they were earnestly thinking about at that time through a vivid description.
In addition, on this occasion, I hope this will be a good opportunity for you to become acquainted with a remarkable person in the Choshu domain, Masatsugu Yamane. He lived during the new age of the Meiji period and wanted his message left for the future of Japan.
