The Hagi domain patronized Unkoku school was founded by
Unkoku Togan by receiving an atelier of Sesshu’s called
“ Unkokuan,” and his long scroll of landscape painting named
“ Sansuichokan” ( a national treasure ) from the lord, Terumoto
Mori in proof of the successor.
Later, the Unkoku school succeeded the painting style of
Sesshu from generation to generation through the Edo period and
left many excellent works not only in the Choshu domain but also
in the old temples in Kyoto. The Unkoku school, which was
established in the Hagi domain and held an important position,
came to be well known all over the western part of Japan, and
developed into a very great school in the artists’ world, ranking
with the shogunate patronized Kano school in the Edo central
artists’ world.
This special exhibition presents the world of the wonderful
beauty chiefly through the works painted by the Unkoku school
artists and in the possession of our museum. |
