The closing days of the Edo period were charged with acts of violence and plots. In the midst of the turbulent days, some young persons in the Choshu domain believed in overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate envisaging a new Japan under the Emperor and fought it out. This exhibition is about the genealogy of this dramatic affair.

Wallet carried by Toshimaro Yoshida

The keepsake of Toshimaro Yoshida, who was one of the disciple of Shoin and fought against the Shinsengumi at the lkedaya incident only to be killed.

 

 

Helmet worn by Fukuhara Echigo

The helmet worn by Fukuhara Echigo, chief retainer of the Choshu domain, who killed himself by disembowelment from a sense of responsibility for the rebellion at the Kinmon Gate of the Imperial Palace.

 

 

Portrait of Ryoma Sakamoto

The portrait of Ryoma Sakamoto, who escaped from the Tosa domain soon after he heard about the theory of uprising of the common people in the grassy field from Genzui Kusaka in Hagi.

 


 

Address book

The address book in which the full names of Shinsaku's acquaintances in other domains were written. In the part of the Tosa domain, the names of Hanpeita Takechi and lzo Okada were described.
