The temple of Shokokuji in Kyoto, which was built under the auspices of Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, 3rd shogun of the Muromachi period, in the latter half of the 14th century, is the main temple of the Rinzai sect Shokokuji school. The temple had a central role in administration of the five leading Rinzai temples in Kyoto and produced many great Zen Buddhist monks. It also contributed to a new outpouring of culture, which came to be known as the Gozan Bunka.Yoshimitsu Ashikaga constructed the temple of the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji), where the Kitayama Bunka, the Culture of the Northern Mountains was highly advanced. On the other hand, the 8th shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga built the temple of the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji), where the Higashiyama Bunka, the Culture of the Eastern Mountains, flourished. Both of the temples were affiliated with the Shokokuji school of the Rinzai sect.
Of a vast collection of treasures and cultural assets handed down in the temples of Shokokuji, Kinkakuji, and Ginkakuji, some fine works of art to symbolize the Muromachi Culture and the Momoyama Culture such as paintings, calligraphy by Zen monks, and tea ceremony utensils have been brought together and are put on display in the Hagi museum. Please appreciate the beauty of these treasures. |
