He learned mining and civil engineering. Coming back in 1868, he became head of the railway construction and contributed to the Japanfs first railway construction between Shimbashi (Tokyo) and Yokohama. Later on he was appointed to the Director General of the Railway Agency and constructed a network of railways. He devoted his life to railways. He also set up a train manufacturing limited partnership in 1896 and made an effort to begin home production of locomotives.
