In the tempestuous period toward the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, the Choshu domain secretly sent five ambitious young persons to Britain for study. In 1863, they arrived and began to study at University of London. They were greatly shocked to see the British civilization and advanced technology. They devoted their lives to assimilating the modern Western civilization. After returning from Britain, they contributed to modernization of Japan in each field.
We will exhibit the picture on the right on the following days.
