In 1866 he came back. He acted as an interpreter at the interview between Lord Takachika Mori and his son, Motonori, and Admiral King of the British fleet and played an important role in diplomacy. After Meiji Restoration he entered the Meiji government service and he held important posts in the mint and ministry of finance. In 1881 he became Director of the Mint Bureau, and succeeded in striking Western new coins without any foreign engineerfs help. He also opened rows of cherry trees at the mint bureau to the citizens of Osaka as g Passing through a grove of the cherry trees in full bloom.h
