〜 A TIME WARP

THE SECRET OF THE CASTLE TOWN OF HAGI

Nov. 28, Saturday, 2009〜 Jan. 28, Thursday, 2010
Project-based Exhibition Room

In the city of Hagi, the map of the castle town drawn in the Edo period can be still used as a city map even today. That is because the castle town built in the Edo period has been well preserved and handed down as it used to be.
In this exhibition we’d like to pursue the secret of the unchanged castle town and rediscover the castle town in existence even now, picking up the next words “the lower swampland”, “the railway”, “the citrus orange”, and “the disaster” as the key words of the exhibition.

The Picture Map of the Castle town in the Edo period

The Shinbori river and the Omizo (the Aiba waterway) were canalized and came to play a big part in flood control. In 1849, the lower swampland in the central part of the Delta was developed and the large-scale domain school of “Meirinkan” was constructed.

The Pamphlet Published when the Railway Service started

In 1925, the long-cherished dream of the railway construction was realized and the railway was laid so as to skirt around the Delta. Therefore, the quarters of the townspeople and samurai inside the delta have not been destroyed but well preserved.

The Labels put on the Baskets of the Oranges when they were Shipped out

In 1876, the citrus orange began to be planted in the big samurai premises to save samurai who had not been paid any salary from the domain after the Meiji Restoration. The citrus orange supported Hagi’s economy for a long time.As a consequence, the layout of the premises in the samurai quarter has been well preserved to this day.
