THE TREASURES OF THE HAGI MUSEUM

In this special exhibition, the masterpieces chiefly in the divisions ofhistory and fine arts picked out of all the possessions and the newly donated excellent things, are to be opened to the public.The sword noted in connection with the Hagi domain lord of the Mori clan, which was designated as National Important Cultural Property, is also to be specially exhibited .

A brand sword “Nobuyoshi”

(National Important Cultural Property)

It was made by Nobuyoshi, a swordsmith of the Ryumon school in Yoshino-gun, Yamatonokuni, who was actively engaged in making swords in the last Kamakura period (1317〜18).The gold lacquer of a paulownia, an arrowhead, and a chrysanthemum crest was painted with gold sprinkled laquer for a background.It was possessed by the 6th Lord of the Hagi domain, Munehiro Mori.

The letter written by Shoin Yoshida

This is a letter which Shoin Yoshida wrote to Yajiro Shinagawa on his best behavior on Dec. 9, 1858.On Dec. 5, 1858, Shoin Yoshida was ordered to be imprisoned by the domain.On the following day, his six students including Yajiro Shinagawa were confined to their homes because they made a protest against the domain’s decision.Shoin wondered if the students in confinement were working hard.

“Kohagi dolls“ , small Japanese dolls made by Teiko Yanagibashi

These dolls originated from a small handmade doll produced by women in Hagi at the beginning of the Showa period and they began to be produced actively as typical souvenirs.Sadako Yanagibashi studied under Nobu Matsumura, a founder of the doll, and she was engaged in making the doll from 1935.

 

 

The teakettle and the brazier (tea implements)

The clanspersons of the Hagi domain, Saori Okudaira and his son, Namie donated them to “the Daishoin temple”, a family temple of the Mori clan.The family crest of the Mori clan was carved on the teakettle and the brazier made of copper, tin, and zinc.


 

“A flock of cranes under the green pine trees on the beach” and “A painting of a turtle playing on the precipice”

Kansai Mori (1814〜94) was born in Hagi and a representative Japanese painting artist of the Maruyama school in Kyoto.In the last days of the shogunate, he kept company with royalists, studying painting, and he was designated to a domain office.After the Meiji Restoration, he was entirely devoted to painting and nominated for a court artist equal to the present living national treasure.

Rangai Inoue (1875〜1947) was a pioneer in studying Sesshu in West Japan.He was a son of a doctor to the Tsuwano domain.He became an artist and led a life in Hagi.Making his living by painting, he was absorbed in studying Sesshu, andcompiled his studies into one book called “The study on Sesshu” (unpublished).
